B-Roll footage is a bit of a misnomer for something that’s actually a key component of making a talking-head video into something more vivid, with good pacing and interesting variety.
You might assume that the most important footage we get in a shoot is of the main interviewee discussing whatever topic we’re covering for the video and you wouldn’t be wrong.
STEP UP B ROLL FOOTAGE
Of course, the main crux of this kind of video material has to be the central topic or story and the person or people telling it but without a really solid bank of cutaway shots to tap into in the edit, the final video can become flat and one-dimensional.
Cutaways might include outside shots, movement/action shots, relaxed moments or shots taken at events. They’re a key tool in the edit to bring variety and context as well as to facilitate moves between cuts.
The shots take time to get though and might involve a bit of prancing around that you weren’t expecting and don’t see the point of. But they’re always 100% worth doing; giving us so many more options in the edit for both long and short cuts of the same topic.
So if I’m asking you to randomly walk up and down or come in and out of your office a few times, remember that this will all be worthwhile in the long run!
